smartIAQ FAQs

What is smartIAQ?

smartIAQ is GPS Air's closed-loop air cleaning system for commercial buildings. It monitors indoor contaminants, activates air cleaning as needed, and confirms that contaminant levels stay within the design targets required under ASHRAE 62.1-2019 - 2025 or ASHRAE 241.

The system is designed around the Indoor Air Quality Procedure (IAQP), a performance-based ventilation pathway that allows engineers to reduce outdoor air requirements, reducing equipment and energy use, when active air cleaning is in place and verified.

How does smartIAQ operate autonomously?

The system continuously monitors for the contaminants of concern specified under ASHRAE 62.1-2022, including formaldehyde, TVOCs, CO2, and particulate matter.

When contaminant levels rise, the system responds without manual input. When levels return to target, it scales back CFM, preserving filter life.

This self-adjusting cycle is what GPS Air means by autonomous air cleaning: the outcome is verified clean air, not a dashboard that someone has to act on.

What contaminants does smartIAQ monitor?

smartIAQ sensors track the contaminants of concern identified under ASHRAE 62.1-2019 - 2025 for IAQP compliance, including total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), formaldehyde, and fine particulate matter (PM2.5/PM10).

The unit also tracks other key measures such as temperature and CO2.The sensor data feeds the closed-loop system to control air cleaning output, and can connect to BMS systems for building reporting.

How does smartIAQ support IAQP compliance under ASHRAE 62.1-2019 - 2025?

The Indoor Air Quality Procedure allows engineers to supplement or replace the ventilation rate procedure with a prescriptive, contaminant-control approach. To qualify, the design must include active air cleaning and documented evidence that indoor levels are designed to manage the prescribed contaminants of concern for the space and occupancy per ASHRAE Standard 62.1. smartIAQ gives engineers a standards-based path to cleaner indoor air, reducing outdoor air and conditioning load while providing the verification data to back it up.

GPS Air's Application Engineering team can assist with IAQP documentation and project review.

What are the energy savings associated with smartIAQ?

The primary savings come from reducing outdoor air conditioning load. Under a standard VRP design, buildings condition large volumes of unconditioned outdoor air year-round.

IAQP designs using smartIAQ can reduce outdoor air intake by up to 50%, which translates to 6-9% total building energy savings in many projects.

Equipment can often be downsized at the design stage, which lowers first cost before energy savings are factored in. A K-12 school project documented over $170,000 in upfront cost savings by reducing outdoor air with an IAQP design.

Is smartIAQ compatible with existing HVAC systems?

Yes. smartIAQ is available in configurations designed for different installation scenarios. The smartIAQ GridSet™ installs as a lay-in ceiling tile replacement, with no ductwork modification required.

The smartIAQ Distributed system serves individual rooms or multi-zone spaces without relying on central HVAC.

The smartIAQ Centralized system installs as a side-stream to an existing air handling unit for building-wide integration. The smartIAQ Performance system is engineered for high-demand or high-contaminant environments.

Does smartIAQ integrate with building automation systems (BAS)

Yes. smartIAQ is designed to connect with building automation systems, allowing IAQP performance data to feed into the building's existing controls infrastructure.

This supports demand-controlled ventilation strategies and gives facility teams continuous visibility into IAQ performance without additional standalone monitoring hardware.

Does smartIAQ qualify for LEED or WELL credits?

smartIAQ supports WELL Building Standard certification and supports LEED IAQP credit pathways. Project teams should confirm specific credit applicability with their certifying body, as documentation requirements vary by project type and certification version.

Is the smartIAQ Project Builder free to use?

Yes. The smartIAQ Project Builder is a free, web-based IAQP ventilation calculator. It allows engineers to build complete IAQP designs based on ASHRAE 62.1, configure ventilation and equipment schedules, and generate editable equipment schedules. Projects can be saved, imported, and shared from any browser.

Could the Indoor Air Quality Procedure Be the Largest Savings Opportunity Being Overlooked?

IAQP is the engineered path to ventilation efficiency, reducing outdoor air and delivering both lower first cost and long-term energy savings.

The VRP is an indirect solution to achieving IAQ. The IAQP is a more direct approach to the goal of indoor air quality.
The IAQP may allow for a more cost-effective solution to providing good air quality...
The IAQP may also be used to achieve better air quality than the VRP (lower contaminant levels and/or higher perceived acceptability) with or without increasing first cost or maintenance cost.
